Gulfport closes Beach Boulevard to traffic each February for Get Rescued, a free animal-rescue street festival that runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Up to 50 rescue groups line the street, and the proceeds go to them. Dachshunds break from numbered starting boxes onto a short green track in the Florida Wiener Dog Derby, and phones go up all along the rail. Now and then a skunk or pig turns up among the adoptable dogs and cats. Pet-friendly vendors sell treats and gear, and there are training demonstrations, pet care education, raffles and a pet food and supplies drive. Organizers set up complimentary parking throughout the surrounding area. Leashed, well-behaved pets are welcome to come with their people, and Gulfport's shops and restaurants stay open along the route.
