About this happenin

Beach Boulevard closes to traffic and fills with up to 50 rescue groups for Gulfport's Get Rescued, a free animal-rescue street festival held each February. The Gulfport Merchants Chamber has run it for more than two decades, and the format holds steady: adoptable dogs, cats and the occasional skunk or pig, pet-friendly vendors selling treats, art and gear, training demonstrations, pet care education, raffles and a pet food and supplies drive. The crowd favorite is the Florida Wiener Dog Derby, where dachshunds break from numbered starting boxes onto a short green track while phones go up along the rail. Proceeds go to the participating rescue groups. Know before you go: admission is free, hours run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the organizers put out complimentary parking throughout the surrounding area. Leashed, well-behaved pets are welcome alongside their people, and Gulfport's shops and restaurants stay open along the route.
