People in gecko masks walk Beach Boulevard on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, when Gulfport shuts the street to cars and sets up two music stages. The Gulfport Merchants Chamber runs this end-of-summer party for a town that has declared itself weird. Aerialists, fire eaters, magicians, dancers and balloon artists perform at close range between the arts and crafts booths and the food vendors. At 6 p.m. the reigning Gecko Queen leads a wacky walking parade of costumes down the boulevard. GeckoFest closes out GeckoWorld, which includes the Gecko Crawl and the Gecko Ball. Parking is free, and courtesy shuttles carry people from off-site lots to the gates, so leave the car away from the waterfront and ride in. The festival runs 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with no admission charge, and costumes are encouraged.
