The Florida Birding and Nature Festival spends four days each April teaching people to actually see Tampa Bay's wildlife, from seminars with working biologists to guided field trips by bus, boat and kayak. Its base is the state wildlife commission's Suncoast Youth Conservation Center in Apollo Beach, where a free expo fills the pavilion with nature organizations, original artwork and vendors, and free flying bird exhibitions put hawks in the air over a grassy slope of spectators on Saturday. Keynote talks run in the evening at a church hall in nearby Sun City Center. Know before you go: the seminars and the expo cost nothing, and the expo is open 10am to 5pm on Friday and Saturday. The Saturday bird shows are at 11am and 2:30pm. Field, boat and kayak trips carry separate fees, as do the keynote buffets, and an all-inclusive pass covers everything. Bring binoculars, sun cover and water. Lunch is sold on site.
