On Saturday of the Florida Birding and Nature Festival, hawks fly over a grassy slope of spectators at the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center in Apollo Beach, in free flying bird exhibitions at 11am and 2:30pm. The festival spends four days each April teaching people to actually see Tampa Bay's wildlife. There are seminars with working biologists, and guided field trips go out by bus or on the water by boat and kayak. The state wildlife commission's center is the base, and a free expo of nature organizations and vendors fills its pavilion. Keynote talks run in the evening at a church hall in nearby Sun City Center. The seminars and the expo cost nothing, and the expo is open 10am to 5pm on Friday and Saturday. Field trips and the keynote buffets carry separate fees, unless you buy the all-inclusive pass that covers everything. Lunch is sold on site. Bring binoculars, sun cover and water.
