Every December the Clearwater Yacht Club puts on a parade of lit-up boats, running from just north of the Mandalay Channel Bridge to Clearwater Beach Marina. The route loops around Island Estates, passes Coachman Park, heads toward the Sand Key Bridge and goes by the club itself before the finish. The boats start moving at 6 p.m., and people watch from the waterfront along the way. The club has run it for more than fifty years. Any vessel can enter for free, though only boats that register and get an official parade number are judged. A panel from the Clearwater community and the yacht club scores theme, color, lighting, creativity and special effects at the marina. Prizes go to powerboats 30 feet and over, powerboats 29 feet and under, sailboats, and one Overall Best in Parade. Net proceeds pay for youth sailing scholarships at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center, for children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast.
