Washington Square Park Holiday Tree Lighting
Washington Square Arch, Fifth Avenue and Waverly Place, New York, NY 10003
About this happenin
The Washington Square Association lights a 45-foot Christmas tree under the Washington Square Arch in Greenwich Village, usually in the first or second week of December at 6 p.m. A brass quartet and a professional singer lead the carols, and the association prints several hundred copies of a songbook for the crowd and offers it as a free download. Once the lights go on, the tree stays lit each night from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. through the season. The lighting is free, and donations are welcome but never required. A second sing-along follows on Christmas Eve at 5 p.m. The association is a volunteer-run neighborhood group founded in 1906, and it has sponsored carol singing under the arch for well over a century.
