About this happenin
Times Square's New Year's Eve celebration ends with the Ball sliding down the flagpole atop One Times Square at 11:59 p.m. on December 31, a 60-second drop that the crowd below counts out together. It has been lowered every year since 1907 except 1942 and 1943, when wartime lighting restrictions put it on hold. Nobody needs a ticket. The Times Square Alliance runs the street celebration as a free, first-come event, and it warns that all-access passes sold for the night cannot get anyone past the police lines. Viewing areas have opened at 3 p.m., with access points at 45th, 49th, 52nd and 56th Streets on Sixth and Eighth Avenues. The Ball is easiest to see along Broadway from 43rd to 50th Street. Take the subway, but know that the 42nd Street station entrances close in the morning.
