About this happenin
Costumed dogs march down Avenue B in the East Village at the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade, which steps off at 11 a.m. on an October weekend day. It starts at East 13th Street and runs south to East 7th Street beside Tompkins Square Park. The nonprofit New York Dog Parade, which runs it, says it began at Manhattan's first dog run and that many call it the world's largest dog parade. Dogs that march and their owners register ahead of time, and registration can close before the day. Anyone can watch without signing up. The organiser suggests finding a spot along Avenue B by about 10:30. The Festival Block on East 6th Street between Avenues B and C is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a costume contest runs alongside. Strollers and small carts are fine and golf-cart-size builds are not. Costumes can't get in the way of a dog's sight or hearing.
