Holidays & ParadesEaster Parade and Bonnet Festival
Fifth Avenue between East 49th and East 57th Streets, New York, NY 10022
About this happenin
Bring a bonnet and you can join the parade. On Easter Sunday, people in their festive finery fill Fifth Avenue between 49th and 57th Streets to show off their best hats, from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nobody organizes it and there are no tickets. The city's tourism office suggests watching from around St. Patrick's Cathedral, which the crowd passes on the way north. New Yorkers have been doing this since the 1870s. Irving Berlin wrote a song about it, and the film Easter Parade, with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, carried it well beyond the avenue. Easter moves, so some years the parade lands in March and others in April.
