About this happenin
On the first Saturday evening of August, the 300 to 600 blocks of Julia Street in New Orleans' Arts District fill with people in white linen for White Linen Night. White linen is the old way of dressing for a New Orleans summer, and guests are asked to wear it. Arts District New Orleans, the association of the district's galleries and museums, started the gallery stroll in 1994 to bring people downtown in the slowest stretch of summer. Upwards of 50,000 visitors now come. More than twenty galleries and museums open new exhibitions that night, and the Contemporary Arts Center and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art join in. Bands play on stages along Julia, and food trucks and drink vendors work the street. The evening has run from 5 to 10 p.m., and walking the street is free. The Contemporary Arts Center holds a ticketed after-party, and a paid Cool Down Lounge offers a break from the heat.
