About this happenin
Satchmo SummerFest is a free two-day celebration of Louis Armstrong at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, inside the Old U.S. Mint at 400 Esplanade Avenue on the edge of the French Quarter. For years Armstrong told interviewers he was born on July 4, 1900. His real birthday, August 4, 1901, only came to light after he died. The first festival was held in 2001, on what would have been his 100th birthday, and it now falls on a weekend close to the real date, around the start of August. French Quarter Festivals, Inc. produces it. Local musicians perform both days, and Louisiana restaurants sell food from booths. A lecture series brings in experts on Armstrong's life and what he left behind.
