About this happenin
Every April the French Quarter fills with more than 20 stages for French Quarter Festival, a free four-day run of music from Woldenberg Riverfront Park down to the Old U.S. Mint. Traditional jazz, brass bands, zydeco, funk, reggae and Cajun music play on them, and a few of the stages sit inside hotels and the Jazz Museum instead of out on the grass. More than 70 food and drink booths sell dishes from local restaurants, so a barbecue shrimp po-boy gets eaten standing in front of a band. French Quarter Festivals, Inc., a nonprofit, started it in 1984 as a way to bring people back to the neighborhood's shops and restaurants. It runs Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day, and a parade opens the first morning. Everything is cashless. Coolers and tents are out, as are shade structures and pets. Parking is tricky, so arrive early or take the ferry to the foot of Canal Street, which lands beside an entrance.
