About this happenin
On Thanksgiving Day, Easton Park in Mid-City, New Orleans, becomes a racetrack where the horses are people. Runners in horse masks carry riders piggyback while a crowd in costume lines the barricades, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The racers belong to five stables: the Wild Horses, the Star Skufflers, the 24-Carrot Club, B.U.B.B.L.E. and the Patchouli Dusters. The stables keep their names every year and the horse characters change. The 24-Carrot Club calls itself the Noblest Stable. The Wild Horses are not really a stable at all, since they refuse to be tamed. Founder Ingrid Anderson had the idea in 2014, after years of Thanksgivings at the racetrack and new friends who were uncomfortable with real horse racing. She held the first races in 2019. The money goes to Greeno Equine Sanctuary, which keeps horses that can't be adopted for the rest of their lives.
More in November: 11 other New Orleans events.
