Gretna Maifest sets up a spring beer garden on the Sixth Street parking lot beside the German-American Cultural Center at 519 Huey P. Long Avenue in Gretna. Two German bands play, and the Bier Musikanten brass band from the Deutsches Haus has been one of them, lederhosen and all. Grilled brats, homemade sauerkraut, baked pretzels and German beer and wine are sold on the spot. Admission is free, and so is the center's museum. The beer garden has kept hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second Saturday of May, though weather pushed it back a week in both 2025 and 2026. The City of Gretna makes a morning of it along Huey P. Long Avenue, with the Gretna Farmers' Market and a stretch of art and plant vendors called Stroll the Avenue. Some years, local schoolchildren learn to wind ribbons around two maypoles on the neutral ground.
