About this happenin
Each Fourth of July weekend, the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center hosts the daytime half of Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans, while the nightly concerts are a separate ticketed event at the Caesars Superdome. You do not need a concert ticket to spend the day at the Convention Center. Daytime admission is free, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Essence magazine threw a one-time party for its 25th anniversary in 1995, and the festival grew out of it. Stages carry conversations with authors and entrepreneurs, and a marketplace sells from Black-owned businesses. There are also cooking demonstrations and beauty and wellness sessions. Sunday brings a gospel celebration.
More in July: 3 other New Orleans events.
