King Mango Strut
Commodore Plaza & Main Highway, Coconut Grove, Miami, FL 33133
About this happenin
The King Mango Strut is a satirical parade through the streets of Coconut Grove, held since 1982. It began as a parody of the King Orange Jamboree Parade, which no longer runs, and it still lampoons whatever the year handed Miami. Hundreds of Strutters march, and more than 10,000 people watch, by the organizers' count. Watching is free, and so is marching: there is no entry fee, just an application on the parade's site. The parade is on the first Sunday of January, from 2 to 6 p.m., with streets closed from 10 a.m. The route starts at Commodore Plaza and Main Highway, turns onto Main Highway, then Grand Avenue at CocoWalk, and loops back along Commodore Plaza. If the crowd is having too much fun, it goes around again. Parking is a block off the route at the Municipal Garage (Oak Avenue and Mary Street), with more at CocoWalk and Mayfair. Bike Coconut Grove has offered a free attended bike valet. Leave pets at home. Bars and restaurants along the route sell their own cocktails.
