About this happenin
The Key Biscayne Fourth of July Parade is a free, all-volunteer procession down Crandon Boulevard on July 4, run by a committee of island residents under the Key Biscayne Community Foundation. It started in 1959, when two neighbors, Tommy Sikes and Arthur Yehle, asked a few friends to march around the Key. Tommy put together a band of local musicians called the Chowder Chompers, and the island's kids decorated their bikes and rode along. Now it draws dozens of entries, including school bands and decorated golf carts. The parade steps off at 11 a.m. after a flyover of F-16s from Homestead Air Reserve Base and runs from Harbor Drive to Westwood Drive. Southbound Crandon has closed from about 10:15 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., and the fireworks have gone up at 9 p.m. The Rotary Club of Key Biscayne runs a barbecue picnic on the Village Green during and after the parade. Water balloons, water guns, confetti and streamers are banned.
