Each November, Houston Ballet runs its Nutcracker Market at Reliant Center in Reliant Park, with more than 280 merchants selling seasonal decor, gifts, gourmet treats, jewelry and fashion. Preston Frazier, a longtime Houston Ballet supporter, took the idea to the Houston Ballet Guild in 1981: a holiday market in the tradition of a European or Latin American street market. It began in a church bazaar setting. Every admission and special-event ticket goes to Houston Ballet, its Academy and scholarship programs, along with 11% of what shoppers spend, and the market has raised more than $100 million. The Wells Fargo Preview Party on the Wednesday evening gets the first look at the floor, and the Snow Queen's and Sugar Plum's fashion show luncheons follow on Thursday and Friday. A smaller Nutcracker Market SPRING runs each spring.
