About this happenin

The Houston St. Patrick's Parade runs through downtown Houston in March, starting from City Hall. It lasts about two hours and has more than 100 entries each year. The Houston St. Patrick's Parade Commission puts it on, and it has always been free to watch. Groups pay a small fee to march or ride in it. Parades on St. Patrick's Day began in the 1880s in Irish Town, by the old St. Patrick's Church on Harrisburg, and ended at Market Square. They stopped around the First World War. The current parade dates from 1960, when radio hosts Tim Nolan and Bob Bryant announced one for downtown on March 17. It was only a few blocks long, and its theme was that everyone is Irish, if only for the day. The Ancient Order of Hibernians took it over, and in the 1970s a group of businessmen called the Original 45 raised the money for it. It moved to Richmond Avenue in the late 1980s and came back downtown in 2000. A group called the Irish 100 backs it now.
