Houston Holi Festival of Colors
Houston, TX
About this happenin
Colored powder flies all afternoon at Houston Holi, a spring Festival of Colors in Houston. Masala Radio 98.7 FM, the city's Bollywood station, leads it with community groups and sponsors, and calls it one of the largest Holi festivals in the US. The main stage carries Bollywood and Indian folk dance, DJ sets, a live concert and a Maha Aarti, a ceremonial prayer for world peace. Pichkaris, the water guns, make their rounds. Kids ride free, the bubble stations are free too, and a parade of rickshaws goes through. Indian street food vendors and food trucks fill the rest of the grounds. Powder comes in ten colors, bought ahead online or at the Gujarati Samaj of Houston booth opposite the main stage, and the money goes to that nonprofit. Outside powder is not allowed, and security checks bags. Wear white, or anything you don't mind getting colored. It is a family event with no alcohol, and the next day is held as a rain date.
More in March: 6 other Houston events.
