Trinity Flyfest

About this happenin

Trinity Flyfest is Fort Worth's urban fishing celebration, held on the Clear Fork of the Trinity River near Bryant Irvin Road and River Park Drive on a Saturday in March. Admission is free and the day runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Tarrant Regional Water District ends its trout stocking season with the festival, and Streams & Valleys produces it with the district. The Big Trout Contest runs on the water from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in five heats. Teams register online ahead of time, there are no sign-ups on site, and spectators are welcome. Anyone over 17 who fishes needs a license, in the contest or in the open fishing area, where bait and fly anglers both fish from the banks. Casting demonstrations are on the lawn beside the River Park Trailhead. The classes start with a pick-up-and-lay-down cast for first-timers aged 8 and up, and a roll-cast class goes out on the water. Bring your own rod, since only a limited number of loaners are on hand. Fly tyers work in tents, and expert presentations are held inside the Acme Brick headquarters building. There are cooking demos, food trucks, beer and wine, live music and, for kids, face painting, a rock-climbing wall and a kids' fish tank. Dogs are welcome. If it rains, activities move to paved lots, and lightning clears everyone out of the water. The Trinity Trails lead straight to the festival and there is bike parking (bring a lock). Parking at the trailhead is $10.
