About this happenin
The Skokie Festival of Cultures fills Oakton Park, a 19-acre park at 4701 Oakton Street in Skokie, for one weekend in May. The first festival, in 1991, was a single stage with 14 cultures and just over 1,000 visitors. It now counts more than 30 cultures and around 25,000 visitors a year. Cultures set up interactive booths in the Cultural Pavilion, and two stages carry folk music and dance both days. The grounds also hold food and drink vendors, arts and crafts, international children's games and the flag display the festival is known for. The opening ceremony is on Saturday afternoon. Recent years have closed on Sunday with a Festival of Colors, a Holi celebration of spring. The Skokie Park District runs it. Parking is in the park's north lot, which is first come and fills early each day, and on the streets east of the park along Kolmar Avenue.
