About this happenin
Maxwell Street Market is a free, city-run Sunday market on Maxwell Street between South Halsted and South Union in Chicago. It opens on select Sundays from May to October, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stalls sell handmade crafts, resale housewares, clothing and more, and live music plays through the day. The market works with nearby restaurants with long ties to the neighborhood, Jim's Original Hot Dog and Express Grill among them. Individual Sundays carry a theme, such as a blues day or a kids' edition run by young vendors. Jewish immigrants started the market in the late 1800s and the city recognized it in 1912. Blues players set up beside the storefronts and plugged into the merchants' power. The city moved the market in 1994 and again in 2008, and brought it back to its original block in May 2024. The CTA Blue Line stops at Halsted. Extreme weather occasionally closes the market.
