The Great American Lobster Fest takes over the north and south beer gardens near the east end of Navy Pier, at 900 E. Grand Avenue in Chicago, for a weekend at the end of summer. Maine lobster is flown in fresh each day. A lobster meal bought online ahead of time is the cheapest way to get one, because prices rise as the weekend nears and whole lobster meals often sell out. Lobster rolls, bisque, drinks and merchandise are add-ons at checkout. Walking onto the pier grounds costs nothing, and the on-site food vendors sell à la carte. Barbecue and sweets are there for anyone who skips seafood. Bands play and craft vendors set up stalls, with Lake Michigan and the skyline behind it all. The organiser calls it family-friendly.
