About this happenin
El Grito Chicago is a two-day festival of Mexican independence at Butler Field in Grant Park, with the skyline for a backdrop. Banda and other live acts play from the afternoon into the night, and the food comes from local vendors around the city, tacos and micheladas included. There is an artisan mercado, along with bars and things for kids to do. On Sunday night the Consul General of Mexico in Chicago leads the civic Grito ceremony, the 1810 cry for independence, and a free ticket covers that part of the night alone. Single-day and weekend tickets are sold online, and children 10 and under get into general admission free with a paying adult. Bring one flag on a pole shorter than eight inches, and leave chairs, coolers and outside food at home. The organisers paused it for a year over safety and brought it back with stronger security.
