Polish Constitution Day Parade
Columbus Dr & Balbo Dr, Chicago, IL 60605
About this happenin
The Polish Constitution Day Parade marches up Columbus Drive in Grant Park on the first Saturday of May, close to the May 3 anniversary of Poland's 1791 constitution. Chicago's Polish community has held it since 1891, when the Polish National Alliance marked the constitution's centennial. After a hundred years the Alliance handed it to a civic committee under the Alliance of Polish Clubs in the USA. More than 50 Polish language schools and youth groups march, some from Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan. The grand marshal is always a figure from the Polish American community, and a parade queen is chosen at a pageant beforehand. Food and merchandise vendors open the Parade Faire at Balbo and Columbus in the morning, ahead of the late-morning step-off. The same weekend brings a Polish flag raising at Daley Plaza and a wreath at the Kosciuszko Monument on Solidarity Drive. After the parade the Chicago Chopin Foundation gives a concert in Grant Park.
