About this happenin
The Chicago Powwow is a one-day gathering of Native dancers and drum groups at Schiller Woods East, a Forest Preserves of Cook County site on Irving Park Road. The American Indian Center, founded in 1953, runs it, and the powwow has gone on for more than seven decades. Two Grand Entries open the morning and afternoon sessions, and intertribal dancing and dance specials fill the hours between. The center says competition does not define the day, and the public is welcome to join in. More than 30 vendors sell beadwork and jewelry, and Indian tacos and fry bread are on offer. One admission covers both sessions. Veterans and children five and under get in free, and buying ahead saves adults $5. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Parking is free.
