About
Most of St. John, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, is national park: 7,259 acres of the island's land and 5,650 more underwater. There's no airport on St. John, so fly into St. Thomas and take a ferry or the car barge from Red Hook to Cruz Bay. Trunk Bay has the marked snorkel trail, about 300 feet out along the cay and back, but for green sea turtles go to the Maho Bay seagrass early or late in the day, and for southern stingrays try Salt Pond Bay, about a half-mile hike in. In winter the Christmas winds can bring big waves to the north shore beaches, so take care going in. The ranger-led Reef Bay hike goes down just under 3 miles past Taino petroglyphs to an old sugar mill, and a boat brings you back to Cruz Bay.
