A stone amphitheater at the end of the Gorge Trail puts you below the 215-foot plunge at Taughannock Falls State Park in New York. The trail is about three quarters of a mile, wide and fairly flat, and it stays open all winter. The cliffs around the falls rise nearly 400 feet. The overlook for the view from above is at the upper entrance. Soft shale at the base wears away under a cap of harder sandstone, so the falls keep cutting the gorge back to the west.
