From Apgar, at Glacier National Park's West Entrance, Lake McDonald runs about 10 miles up a valley carved by glaciers. The stretch of Going-to-the-Sun Road near Apgar stays open all year. Lake McDonald Lodge, built in 1913 and 1914 in a hunting-lodge style with Swiss touches, has overnight rooms, and the lake tours and boat rentals go out from its dock. The lake is nearly 500 feet deep and extremely cold even in summer, so wear a life jacket in any boat.
