Henry David Thoreau named the Great Beach, and it starts at Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, on Cape Cod. In winter, harbor seals are often seen at the end of Nauset Spit. From mid-June to Labor Day the beach lot is for Eastham residents and cars with handicap placards; everyone else parks at Little Creek, a short way west, and rides the shuttle. Between September and late May anyone can park there. The Great Storm of 1978 destroyed the old lot, and the Park Service built this one back from the sand.
