On the north end of Jekyll Island, a maritime forest meets the rising Atlantic, and decades of erosion have turned the result into a beach unlike any other in the country: hundreds of weathered oaks and pines lie bleached and rooted in the sand, branches reaching toward the water like a boneyard of giants. Because the shore faces due east, photographers come before dawn to watch the sun climb straight through the bare limbs, and the same trees glow again at blue hour over the wet, mirror-flat sand. Walk in from Clam Creek or one of the pull-offs along North Beachview Drive, go at low tide, and you get a quiet, otherworldly stretch that earns its place on any best-of-the-country list.
