Assateague Island
About
Two herds of wild horses live on Assateague, one in Maryland and one in Virginia, with a fence between them at the state line. The island is 37 miles long, and a car can't cross from one end to the other: reaching the other entrance means going back to the mainland. All the camping is on the Maryland end, at the park's Oceanside and Bayside campgrounds and at Assateague State Park. Dogs aren't allowed anywhere on the Virginia end, even inside a car. The park warns that people who get close to the horses get kicked and bitten, and asks for 40 feet, about a bus length.
