The lighthouse at South Carolina's Hunting Island State Park was rebuilt in 1875 from cast-iron sections so that it could be moved. Beach erosion made that necessary in 1889, and the tower went 1.3 miles inland. It's the only lighthouse in the state open to the public, and tickets for the 167-step climb are sold only on the day, at the oil house across from it (climbers must be at least 44 inches tall). The beach runs more than four miles with no lifeguards, and loggerhead sea turtles nest on it in summer. The 950-foot pier into Fripp Inlet is the one place in the park you can fish without a saltwater license, and the Nature Center lends rods.
