A hike on the floor of Tallulah Gorge, at Tallulah Falls in Rabun County, takes one of 100 free permits handed out each day. You pick one up at the Interpretive Center on the day of your visit, after a safety briefing. They can't be reserved, and on busy days they're gone early. Flip-flops and Crocs aren't allowed on the floor, and dogs can't go there or on the Hurricane Falls staircase down to the suspension bridge. On water-release days the south-side staircase closes and nobody's allowed to hike or climb in the gorge, but on the April and November whitewater weekends you can watch the kayakers from Inspiration Point or overlooks 1 and 9. From overlook 9, on the South Rim, you can also see the north tower Karl Wallenda used for his tightrope walk across the gorge.
