About

In 1733 James Oglethorpe laid out Savannah's first six wards around public squares, with lots for public buildings on two sides and houses on the other two. The plan kept growing through the 1800s to 24 squares between the river and Gaston Street, and 22 are still there, inside a National Historic Landmark district of about 530 acres. The city's DOT shuttles are free and run every 10 minutes. At the district's south end, 30-acre Forsyth Park has an 1858 fountain that goes green every St. Patrick's Day.
