Fort Pulaski National Monument
About
In April 1862, Union rifled cannon opened two 30-foot holes in the southeast face of Fort Pulaski, on Cockspur Island 15 miles east of Savannah. Its brick walls are 7.5 feet thick. The garrison surrendered less than 36 hours after the firing began, once shells came close to the powder magazine. Volunteers in period uniform fire a 30-pound Parrott rifle inside the fort. In summer, alligators often turn up in the moat.
