About

Stairs are the only way up the 55-foot Great Temple Mound at Ocmulgee Mounds in Macon, since the slopes are off limits. It's the largest of seven mounds built by Mississippian people who arrived after 900 CE, and from the top you see across the river floodplain to downtown Macon. The park's 8 miles of trail also reach Civil War earthworks on the Dunlap Trail and the Walnut Creek wetlands on the Opelofa, with egrets, osprey and anhinga. The grounds open at 8 a.m. and the Earth Lodge at 9; everyone has to be out by 5. The lodge is a reconstruction over the original floor of a council chamber, carbon dated to 1015, with 47 molded seats and a platform shaped like an eagle.
