Indian Springs State Park

About

One of the oldest state parks in the country, Indian Springs has drawn people to its sulfur-scented spring water since the Creek Nation gathered here, and you can still fill a cup at the stone springhouse the Civilian Conservation Corps built in the 1930s. Sandy Creek runs shallow over wide rock shelves below the dam, and 105-acre McIntosh Lake handles the fishing, paddling, and a stretch of summer swimming beach. A seasonal museum walks through the Creek history, the resort era, and the CCC, with cottages and a tent campground if you want to stay the night.

Ginnie Springs

Ginnie Springs is a privately owned cluster of seven crystalline springs on the banks of the Santa Fe River near High Springs, where the water holds a constant 72 degrees and visibility so clear that divers call it gin-clear. Float the lazy river run on a rented tube, snorkel the swimming basins, or drop into the Devil Spring cave system that has drawn cave divers from around the world. Summer and early fall bring the clearest river water and the liveliest crowds.

Ichetucknee Springs State Park

Ichetucknee Springs State Park protects a National Natural Landmark headspring that pours out cool, sapphire-clear water to form one of Florida's premier tubing rivers near Fort White. Drift the spring run beneath a canopy of cypress and oak, watch for otters, turtles, and wading birds, and cool off in the 72-degree swimming areas at the headspring and Blue Hole. Tubing from the upper river runs only from late May through Labor Day, so plan summer trips accordingly.

Rainbow Springs State Park

Dunnellon, FL · North Central Florida

Rainbow Springs is a first-magnitude spring near Dunnellon that pushes out hundreds of millions of gallons a day to form the clear Rainbow River. Swim in the headspring basin at a constant 72 degrees, then wander 1930s ornamental gardens past three man-made waterfalls built into old mine tailings. From April to September a separate entrance launches tubers for the lazy float downriver.

High Falls State Park

Jackson, GA · Middle Georgia

The Towaliga River fans out across a wide shelf of granite here and drops about 100 feet in a series of rushing cascades, the largest waterfall in middle Georgia and loudest after a good rain. Two short trails trace each bank past the stone ruins of an old powerhouse, remnants of the 1800s mill town that thrived on this water power before the railroad passed it by. Above the falls sits a quiet 650-acre lake where you can rent a kayak, drop a line for bass, or pitch a tent and stay the weekend.

Macon, GA · Middle Georgia

Macon's Italian Renaissance Revival mansion, built between 1855 and 1859 and nicknamed the Palace of the South, climbs four stories to a three-story cupola over 24 rooms and roughly 18,000 square feet. The Johnston-Felton-Hay House was decades ahead of its time, with indoor plumbing, a speaker-tube intercom and a walk-in safe, and a tour walks you past stained glass, trompe l'oeil ceilings and the original 1850s plasterwork. It is a National Historic Landmark run by the Georgia Trust, and the splayed stone steps and bowed front terrace alone are worth the stop.

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park

Macon, GA · Middle Georgia

Rising from the Macon flats above the Ocmulgee River, these earthen mounds were raised a thousand years ago by Mississippian people who carried the soil basket by basket. Climb the Great Temple Mound for the view its builders had, then duck into a reconstructed earth lodge whose original clay floor, ringed with molded seats, dates to around the year 1015. The visitor center and several miles of trail through the old town make it the most significant Native American site in the state.

Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House

Macon, GA · Middle Georgia

From 1970 to 1973 this Vineville Avenue Tudor was home base for the Allman Brothers Band, their families, and their road crew, and today it holds the largest collection of band memorabilia anywhere. Walk through the bedrooms and the music room to see Duane Allman's guitars, Berry Oakley's bass, handwritten setlists, and the gold records that came out of those years. The restored house lets you stand where Southern rock took shape, instruments and clothing and photographs kept exactly as the people who made the music left them.

Tubman Museum

Macon, GA · Middle Georgia

Founded in 1981 and named for Harriet Tubman, this is the largest museum in the Southeast devoted to African American art, history and culture, and since 2015 it has filled a 49,500-square-foot building on Cherry Street near old Terminal Station. Wilfred Stroud's sweeping mural From Africa to America traces the story from 1619 across an entire wall, while galleries move through fine art, local history and the heritage of Middle Georgia. Plan time for the rotating exhibitions and the dance, drumming and photography programming that keep the place busy year-round.
