Cumberland Island National Seashore
About
Nothing is for sale on Cumberland Island, 45 minutes by ferry from St. Marys, so bring all your food and water and carry your trash back off. The ferry often sells out, and from December through February it runs only Thursday through Monday. Most day visitors see the wild horses, an estimated 100 to 200 of them, near the ruins of Dungeness, the Carnegie mansion that burned in 1959. Keep 50 feet away. Plum Orchard, a mansion of about 22,000 square feet, is a 14-mile round trip from Sea Camp dock. Day visitors are better off taking the Lands and Legacies van tour, which also stops at the Settlement and First African Baptist Church.
