About

Lifeguards staff 20 towers along about three miles of Fort Lauderdale's beach, from Fort Lauderdale Beach Park north to NE 18th Street, every day of the year. Restaurants and bars line the beachfront promenade, but you can't drink on the sand or take glass onto it. The 1960 film Where the Boys Are helped make this a spring break beach, until the city began discouraging college visitors in the mid-1980s. An estimated 350,000 came in 1985. By 1989 it was about 20,000.
