Juneteenth at Emancipation Park
3018 Emancipation Ave, Houston, TX 77004
About this happenin
Juneteenth at Emancipation Park is held in the Third Ward park that formerly enslaved Houstonians bought for the celebration. In 1872 residents of the Third and Fourth Wards, led by Rev. Jack Yates, Richard Allen, Richard Brock and Rev. Elias Dibble, paid $800 for ten acres so Juneteenth would have a place of its own. At the 1898 gathering, Allen supplied 930 pounds of barbecued meat and 84 gallons of gumbo. The City Council voted to accept the park in 1916, and it was rededicated in 2017 after a $33 million restoration. The Emancipation Park Conservancy cares for it under a 30-year management agreement with the city and puts on the celebration, whose format changes from year to year. One recent edition ran on June 19 from 4 to 10 p.m., with live performances and a domino tournament.
