About this happenin
Hermann Park hosts Japan Festival Houston, a free celebration of Japanese culture, over a weekend each September. Glen Gondo, then president of the Japan-America Society of Houston, started it for the society's 25th anniversary after the Japanese Garden opened in the park. The Japanese Festival of Houston, a nonprofit, puts it on, and the City of Houston and Houston Parks and Recreation co-sponsor it. Traditional and contemporary Japanese music and dance fill the stages. Dojos take turns on the martial arts stage with aikido, karate, jujutsu, iaido and kendo. There are demonstrations and displays of ikebana, tea ceremony, origami and bonsai. The tea ceremony needs a ticket booked ahead because seating is limited. Children get goldfish scooping, water yoyos, bouncy-ball scooping and ring toss. Food stalls sell Japanese and Japanese-inspired dishes. Vendors charge for food and merchandise, and some activities carry a fee.
More in September: 4 other Houston events.
