Chicago Labor Day Parade and Eddie Fest
E 112th St and S Avenue F, Chicago, IL 60617
About this happenin
Around Labor Day each year the Chicago Labor Day Parade marches up Ewing Avenue on Chicago's Southeast Side, and Eddie Fest follows straight after with live music and food. The Chicago Federation of Labor runs both. Chicago's first Labor Day parade was in the 1880s, and the East Side held its own from 1959 until 1993. Former 10th Ward Alderwoman Susan Sadlowski Garza brought it back to Ewing Avenue in 2015. Eddie Fest is named for her father, the United Steelworkers activist Edward Sadlowski, who was nicknamed Oilcan because he carried one on his first job in the steel mill. After she retired the parade spent a few years in the Pullman Historic District, then came home to the 10th Ward. Unions, schools, businesses and community groups can register to march.
More in September: 21 other Chicago events.
