About

An elevator takes you below ground at this Smithsonian museum on the National Mall, where the History Galleries begin with the Middle Passage and slavery. You work your way back up through segregation and the Civil Rights Movement to 1968 and the present, about two hours and a mile of walking if you see it all. Free timed passes are released 30 days ahead, and same-day ones go up online by 8:15 a.m. Lines form at the History Galleries from noon to 4, Friday through Sunday, so book a morning pass for those days. The collection includes a shawl Queen Victoria gave Harriet Tubman and a Tuskegee Institute training plane.
