The Mount Baldy Beach Trail at Indiana Dunes National Park, in Michigan City, is 0.75 mile out and back, and the way down is a scramble over loose sand. The only way out is the same climb. The dune itself, 126 feet above the lake and moving inland about 4 feet a year, is closed except on ranger-led programs. West Beach in Gary is the one beach in the park with lifeguards, and its Dunes Succession Trail climbs 270 stairs through four stages of dune development.
