Start at Redfish Lake, 5 miles south of Stanley in Idaho's Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The swimming water there reaches about 70 degrees in late July and early August. From late May to mid-October a boat carries hikers from the North Shore to the Redfish Inlet trailhead, which saves up to 6 miles of walking one way. Sockeye salmon still swim about 900 miles from the ocean to reach the lake. More than 4,000 made it back each year in the 1950s, and far fewer do now.
