About

Tube-building sea worms cement grains of sand into the reef just off Bathtub Reef Beach, at the south end of MacArthur Boulevard on Hutchinson Island in Stuart. Lifeguards watch the beach daily from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., weather permitting. In calm summer seas the reef breaks the waves and families wade in the shallow, sun-warmed water behind it, but from fall through winter, and in any nor'easter or tropical storm, it can't hold back the surf and strong currents can form inside it.
